■ Start. Start. Start. Start—Even though S is the last letter of FOCUS, you must start. Start focusing on Jesus; start focusing on your calling; start putting your dreams into action steps; start.…

■ Strategies—Sixteen years ago in March, my divorce was finalized. Two days later I had my annual checkup. After a mammogram, I had to have a sonogram. They found cancer in my body. I had already lost my finances and our church because of sin in our house. And now at this point, I realized I was losing my life. Devastated, I was not having a good day.

While lying on the examining table, focusing on the sonogram, which I was able to watch, I thought, Put some flowers in my hand and I’ll look like I’m in a casket. Then I thought, I need to find an outfit to wear, and I’d better plan everything out because my children have been through enough. I don’t want them worrying about anything where my death and burial is concerned.

But suddenly it hit me—I have four reasons to live: Charity, Spice, Melody, and Abigail—my girls. And I literally began slapping my face, saying out loud, “No, I’m not going to die. I’m going to live and declare the works of the Lord. My girls need me. They’ll need me to help them with their wedding dresses. That’s the mother’s role, and I don’t want anybody else taking my place. I’m going to have fun shopping for a wedding dress and helping pay for each daughter’s wedding!”

At the time of writing this book, three daughters are married, praise God, and we had enough money for nice weddings. Glory to God! The fourth daughter’s husband is going to be the most awesome, incredible man we’ve ever met in this entire world. They will be perfect for each other.

Note: The word “cancer” should start with an n for nail in your coffin. Too often this dreaded disease is known as the “Big C.” Well, I consider cancer as a little c—Christ is the “BIG C!” Hallelujah!

By now you know that you have to focus. The definition in the dictionary for FOCUS is three pages long. Focus can be a noun or an adverb, meaning emphasis, accent, priority, attention, and concentration. Often an organization’s mission statement emphasizes focusing on helping people. Having a personal mission statement causes you to focus on your goal.
